Pomegranate Molasses
How to make your own concentrated, thick, gooey, pomegranate molasses.
Yield: 1/2 Tbsp. to 1 Tbsp.
Pomegranate Molasses
While you won't get much molasses from just 1 pomegranate, it's good to know how to do this, as it can add extra flavor to something you're making.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 30 Min
Ingredients
- 1 Pomegranate
- 1 Orange
Instructions
- Open up a pomegranate by slicing a piece off the end to expose the seeds and the white ridges. Take a knife and slice down each ridge, about 1/4 inch in, and all the way to the bottom. Crack open the fruit.
- When you remove the seeds, if you don't want to make a red juicy mess, you can put the fruit inside a bowl of water while you tear open the seeds.
- Put the seeds in a blender. In a vitamix I blend it at #2 setting for maybe 10 or 20 seconds. Until it's juiced but not fully blending the seeds. You'll notice the seeds are well juiced.
- Take a nut milk bag and pour the juice through it and into a bowl. Squeeze the juice, and discard the seeds.
- Pour the juice into a little pot, and add juice of one orange. (optional)
- Simmer the juice for about 15 minutes, and let it sit another 5 minutes. You'll have a thick molasses.
Notes
This might feel like a lot of work for a spoonful of molasses, but making your own fresh molasses from organic, local fruit, something you know where it came from, is very satisfying. What's also satisfying, is the whole beautiful process of making it.
