Karina’s Free Range Fertile Eggs

Karina and Ted have lived in the Tuna Canyon area of Topanga since 1976. The previous owner had the perfect setup for chickens so we asked him to leave us a few hens and he agreed. That’s how it all began! We love having our small flock of chickens, currently at 32 happy hens and a handful of roosters. It has been a privilege supplying Topanga with our super fresh Free Range Fertile Eggs during the past 45 years. 

Our hens and roosters are free to roam outside whenever they like in a protected area of a little over 2,400 square feet.  

In addition to poultry feed, we supplement their diet with generous amounts of flax seed (increases Omega 3) and nutritious crimped oats. For their treats we give them sunflower seeds, whole and cracked corn kernels and brown rice. Every year we plant Proso Millet, a high protein grain that our chickens love to forage in our corral. 

Unfortunately grain prices will mark their highest year-over-year inflation since 2011. Our feed costs are soaring (up 12% in 2020) so it may come as no surprise that at best we will be able to break even this year.
