Mc Grath Farm & The Strawberry Experiment

“What do you do on the farm?” My Cousin asked with innocent curiosity and wide open eyes. I realized in that moment, that for someone who hasn’t been on a farm, it must seem very mysterious. I looked at her a moment, imagining she might think, I simply walk around looking at rows of lettuce. What else could you do?

“There’s always action on the farm. It’s very lively. You wouldn’t think of it, but once you get there, you are immersed in it. Whether the lady bugs catch your attention, the bees buzzing, the sounds of various birds singing, or just witnessing how the days challenges are being handled with everyone.”

That morning I was on my way to Mc Grath Family Farm before I stopped to visit her. There was something about her asking me that question that felt really encouraging.

I began to walk the field with Edgar who farms on the property. He has a very calm demeanor and whenever asked a question, he takes his time to answer it with kindness. He looked up as we walked past the edible flowers, feeling pleasantly surprised to see a tractor up ahead. “Oh, what? That’s Phils favorite tractor. He doesn’t let anyone drive it. He must be here.” He didn’t know that Phil Mc Grath, who started the farm 30 years ago, would be there when I came to visit. “He’s rarely ever here.”

After 30 years of successful organic farming, Phil now helps new growers by giving them opportunities on his land. I hear that when he does show up it’s for the pure enjoyment of it. He certainly looked like he was enjoying himself when he came off the tractor to greet us, smiling big.

There was another very nice surprise. Rodale Institute was there, preparing the field for the strawberry experiment! Here’s our video if you would like to see what they’re up to!
